*Major Depression:
This is the most common one of all the types of depression.
*Atypical Depression:
which is a variation of depression that is just slightly different form the major type. The suffer can some time have happiness and moments of joy.
Symptoms of atypical depression include:
* fatigue,
*oversleeping
* Over eating
*Weighted gain
People who suffer from this type of depression believe that the outside events controls their moods, E.g. their success, attention and praise Ect.
Episodes of this type of depression can last for months or the rest of someone’s life.
*Psychotic Depression:
Psychotic depression is when one begins to hear or see imaginary things, some sounds, visuals and voices that6 do not exist. Which are known as hallucinations, (this is more associated with some who suffers fro, schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not a “positive” like normal seen in manic depression hallucinations. These hallucinations are images of frightening and negative sounds and images.
*Dysthymia:
Dysthymia is when many people walk around seeming as if they are depressed but are simply sad or suffering from the blues. They may have been like this all their lives. This is what dysthymia a condition that people are not even aware of having but just live with the way they feel with daily. They will go though life feeling that they are e unimportant, dissatisfied, simply not enjoying their lives. Medication is a beneficial for this type of depression.
*Manic Depression/ bipolar disorder
Manic depression is also known as bipolar disorder, hich is common condition with around one in hundred being diagnosed with the conditions. It can occur in any age but more cases are seen in ages between 18-24 years of age, both females and males can suffer from this. The pattern of mood swings in bipolar can vary widely between each persons who suffer from it.
For example some one may have only a few episodes in their lifetime but would be stable on between. While other may experience more episodes.
*Partum Depression/ post-natal depression (PND)
Major depressive epsiode that can occur after having a baby, depressive symptoms usually being within four weeks of giving birth in some cases it can take months for it to develop. There is often no reason for this depression. It can vary In duration and intensity of the episode
The symptoms of PND :
*Low mood
* Feeling unable to cope
* finding it hard to sleep
Women, may not under stand that they suffer for this and may disagree that there is a problem. partners, family, may find it hard to understand why the women is acting the way she is. It is important for the women to get the support from their partner and family. It is also important for family members to talk to women to talk to the healthcare professional. It is al so important for the people around the women to notice the symptoms of PDN as early as possible. So the treatment can begin.
It is very importantly to understand that having PND does not mean that the person doesn’t lover or care for their baby.
Males can to suffer from PND but this is rare, they may feel that they don’t help or support their partner enough with the baby or around the home. They can feel very stress, and find it difficult to adjust to the demands of the baby.
*Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
A type of depression order which is characterised by the episodes of the major depression, which reoccurs at a specific time of the year (E.g. winter and autumn).
SAD is sometimes known has a “Winter Depression” because the symptoms are more apparent during the winter.
The two main symptoms of SAD are low mood and loss of interest in the normal things.
Other symptoms of SAD include
*being less active
*putting on weight
*sleeping more
Some people who suffer from SAD can be affected by it during the summer as well but this is very rare. The symptoms of SAD often starts when the days begin to get shorted in the autumn. People who suffer from SAD are normal founding it hard about December to February, for most people the symptoms will improve by the spring time.
Treatments are
*Light therapy (treatment with bright lights)
*Talking therapy
*And medication
Situational depression
Is depressive symptoms developed by specific stressful situations or events E.g. job loss, relationship ending. These symptoms occur within 3 months of the stressful situation beginning, usually it will not last as long as 6months. After the stressful situation has been sorted the depression symptoms no longer meet the criteria for major depressive disorder.
